For Prospective Graduate Students
DuPage Medical Group is a multispecialty medical group practice of 290 doctors at 37 locations throughout DuPage County, on staff at five area hospitals. The Psychology Department is one of the specialties within DuPage Medical Group, and currently has one office location in Plainfield. We have one full-time experienced psychologist, who performs individual, family, and marital therapy in addition to neuropsychological evaluations. We accept advanced diagnostic practicum students. We do not offer a therapy practicum experience.
The majority of our referrals come from the physicians within DuPage Medical Group, although we also get referrals directly from the community. We see a patient population ranging from adolescent age 17 through elderly adults. Referrals from our physicians for neuropsychological examinations include:
- Evaluation of teens and adults for behavioral and emotional problems. This includes recommendations for behavioral strategies at home and school.
- Evaluation of adults with neurological conditions, including traumatic brain injuries from motor vehicle accidents, falls, sports and combat injuries; strokes, tumors, epilepsy, and a variety of other neurological disorders resulting in cognitive, behavioral and emotional disability. This includes recommendations for rehabilitation as well as accommodations at work and at home, and coordination of care with the referring physicians.
- Health psychology evaluations, including sleep disorders, diabetes, bariatric surgery and obesity, eating disorders, stress-related disorders, and a variety of other medical conditions. This includes recommendations for treatment and coordination of care with the referring physicians.
- Evaluation of older adults for memory disorders and dementing illnesses, including Alzheimer's disease, with recommendations for care giving, assisted living or nursing home placement, and coordination of medical care with referring physicians.
- Differential diagnosis of psychological and neuropsychological disorders, with recommendations for treatment.
DuPage Medical Group uses EPIC for medical records. Psychological records are kept locked in our medical records room. Psychology staff and graduate students learn to use EPIC for scheduling, and reviewing patients medical records, including medications and lab results. Paper medical charts are also available for review. One of the great advantages of being a diagnostic practicum student at DuPage Medical group is that students learn how psychology operates embedded in a medical group practice, where we have ready access to primary care and specialty physicians and work closely with them.
We also utilize the National Depression Screening Day program throughout the year, and have conducted screenings for depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, and PTSD at area health fairs and on-line through our website.
We have close working relationships with area psychiatrists for medication management. We can schedule a patient to see a psychiatrist in most cases within 24 hours, and work with the psychiatrist for hospitalizations if needed.
Graduate students have their own individual offices right next door to the supervising staff psychologists, who are always available to them. Literature review is provided to supplement training experience. A wide variety of books and journals are available on site, as well as web databases.
The psychology department staff of DuPage Medical Group enjoy training our psychology graduate students, and offer them many unique opportunities throughout the year. Graduate students who come to DuPage Medical Group will learn a great deal about medicine as well as about psychology. We encourage graduate students to apply to our site who are responsible, self-motivated, independent, communicate well, committed to working with their patients, interested in psychological testing, and thrive in a fast-paced work environment with a diverse population.

Our Psychologist
Dawn Kroencke, Ph.D
Training Director
Dr. Kroencke is a licensed clinical psychologist. She received her undergraduate degree in psychology from Quincy University, Quincy, Illinois, and her master and doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from the University of Kansas. She was a PRIME intern (specializing in Primary Care consultation) at the Clement J. Zablocki VA in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She completed a Medical Psychology Residency at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, OR.
Dr. Kroencke works with people in all phases of life, at all stages of health, including patients who find themselves in the throes of serious or chronic illness. Dr. Kroencke helps people learn how to manage their reactions to emotional challenges. She directs her patients toward new ideas and perspectives that focus on what’s controllable about their situations-instead of getting stuck on the negative. She helps people see creative, practical ways to improve their mental and physical health by changing behaviors that get in the way of living in balance.
She has special interest in working with patients living with Multiple Sclerosis.
Her masters and doctoral dissertation research involved how patients cope with this neurological disorder. |
